Introducing the Coffee House Writers Project

Literature matters.

At Coffee House, we create new spaces for artists and audiences and let generosity, collaboration, and inclusivity guide everything we do.

CHP seeks to share our resources to galvanize the book-loving community and support the people whose work makes what we do possible—writers, artists, and booksellers—and who find themselves financially strapped and with fewer opportunities to connect, give readings, and sell books.

That's why we're creating the Coffee House Writers Project (CHWP).

Inspired by the WPA Federal Writers Project of the 1930s, the Coffee House Writers Project (CHWP) is an initiative to commission new, short digital-only literary works from writers whose ability to support themselves has been affected by the COVID-19 health crisis. Canceled speaking engagements, delayed projects, layoffs, furloughs, unpaid caregiving or sick leave, and unpaid leave to facilitate homeschooling are just some of the financial challenges our literary community is facing right now. We want to put money in writers’ hands as quickly as possible. We want to invest in new literature now.

The Coffee House Writers Project gives you the opportunity to enrich and enliven our shared community and support its hard-working members in the process.

As a thank-you for your donation, you will be recognized on our website as a founding supporter for as long as the project exists. Donors will receive a one-year membership to Coffee House Press, through which you will receive the exclusive first look at all CHWP pieces in addition to all other member benefits.

We'll start by sending exciting new writing twice a month, and we hope to be able to increase frequency as the Writers Project grows. First up, you'll hear from Eloisa Amezcua and Fernando Flores.

Literature is not just an escape—it offers us new ways to imagine ourselves and our communities; it has the power to inspire individual and collective action.

The suggested annual membership price is $35, but any donation of $5 or more to this fundraiser will grant you membership for a year.

Join us in creating a space for literature that matters by supporting the Coffee House Writers Project.
