Black Light  ventures into the nobility of black-ness; the divinity of the feminine expression/creative energy; and the harnessing of the sensual expression.  It unpacks  manifestations of Caribbean masquerade as a lens for Self realization, survival and community connection. It exalts mythographies of life and death, birth and creation. It venerates the legacies of ancestors who have paved the way. Black Light is a clarion call to uplift indigenous healing arts in our society at a time when this magic is needed most.

Black Light features 10 Black Minnesota dancers, musicians, and poets, who are prominent practitioners in their respective avenues of contemporary traditional performance and healing arts. This project will inspire and stimulate thoughtful discussion, bringing audiences and performers together in an immersive experience, advancing understanding of our shared humanity through cultural expressions of the African diaspora.

Help bring this work to the stage!

Donate $35 and more and you'll be entered into a drawing for 2 tickets to the Cowles  concert!

Alanna Morris-Van Tassel, Saint-Paul based Dancer-Choreographer, is developing a multi disciplinary  evening-length work with presentations at the Cowles Center for Dance's Merges in March (virtual and LIVE performances in 2021) and its premiere at The Great Northern Festival (a 10-day mid-winter festival that celebrates the Twin Cities' cold, creative winters through unique cultural activities and creative social experiences) in February 2022, produced by Kate Nordstrum.

The mission of Alanna Morris-Van Tassel Productions is to produce solo dance works and global commissions that uplift and inspire our humanity; to produce educational programs that utilize the creative arts as a tool for self- development; and to spearhead community building initiatives that assist mid-career women Creatives with resources to thrive.
