Our specific challenge is to keep community theater alive for those who are physically distant and socially isolated during this pandemic.  Black Dirt has stepped up to this challenge because we want to overcome the diminished opportunities for creativity by providing a creative space (zoom) for community members to express themselves and by providing a connective space (radio) for patrons to enjoy the performance arts.   Our solution:  Black Dirt Radio Theater.   We produce old-time radio shows complete with commercials over the air waves of KDWA Radio (AM1460 & FM97.7) and streaming www.kdwa.com.  These air Sunday evenings at 8:05 p.m. and replay Wednesday afternoons at 2:05 p.m.

Lacey B. is one such volunteer who signed up to be a voice actor.  Here is her story:  "I haven't acted in any stage role since I played Feste in our high school production of Twelfth Night.  Appreciating the high quality of BDT productions, I wanted to try my hand at writing or directing in the April '20 run of The 24 (a 24 hour collaborative effort for artists to produce an original show).  With the pandemic, I was heartbroken at its demise.  I became further depressed when other stages, movie theaters, even museums and zoos, went dark.  2020 and not much was great.  But at summer's end, Black Dirt Radio Theater offered signups via FaceBook for The 24-Minute Original Script Challenge.  The process was easy:  I applied online, received a call-back, practiced on my own,  and rehearsed via zoom twice - I played the voice actor of Abigail in the radio show The Roaring 20's.  For me, working from home, being a busy mom of three, and wife - Black Dirt Radio Theater gave me a great outlet.  As an extrovert, I missed all my social activities so this gave me the opportunity to participate in acting again, to meet new people, and to have some social fun!"
