Several years ago many of us who had been witnessing and participating in Minnesota’s legislative life came together to collectively address the largest public policy challenge we saw in Minnesota - the lack of POCI voices and presence at the capitol. Knowing that key connections in our formative years had given us access and success - we founded Capitol Pathways - a paid internship for college students of color and indigenous students. We envisioned a program where students can gain hands on legislative experience interning with various government entities - while at the same time - creating a cohort of support and community for one another. Widening professional and personal connections and increasing knowledge of policy making.
It has been a pure joy to watch this program grow and to see the Citizens League strengthen and stabilize the model - and to watch alumni from the program do exactly what was intended - transform policymaking in Minnesota! But, it has not been a joy, in fact it has been incredibly painful, to watch the impact of Covid-19 on our 2020 cohort. The pandemic is not impacting all of us equally and is once again highlighting the racial disparities in our systems that led to the creation of Capitol Pathways.
Our students of today need our help, and now more than ever, the state needs Capitol Pathways to keep transforming our policy landscape into the future.
Usually at this time of year we are planning a big celebration of our students and we are coming together to mark their accomplishments. This year, we cannot do that. Not only because of social distancing, but because our students are grappling with the impact of the epidemic on their personal and academic lives.
Many of you have joined me at a Capitol Pathways table or have generously donated to the program - I ask that this year you do the same, and more if you can. Half of what is raised will go DIRECTLY to the students and the other half to assuring the future of the program.
Capitol Pathways is a big part of my beloved community - as are you. Please join me in supporting that community and sharing our love and resources widely and broadly.
This is a time to reimagine our tomorrow - and Capitol Pathways is a key part of a more just and equitable future.
