The Boundary Waters is a gift.
I was already an experienced canoeist when I first went paddling in the Boundary Waters. I was used to lakes that were hundreds of miles away from any road, going down rivers only accessible by float plane. Comparatively, the BWCA was not nearly as remote or isolated as those Canadian rivers. Nonetheless, within a few hours of paddling in the BWCA, I was immersed in the boreal forest and felt as though I had paddled hundreds of miles away from the parking lot.
This wilderness is nothing to take for granted, and right now it faces serious threats from proposed copper sulfide mines, which would pollute its pristine waters.
November 18 is Give to the Max Day, Minnesota’s philanthropic holiday and I’m hosting a fundraiser to support Friends of the Boundary Waters Wilderness, an organization that has been championing the BWCA for over 45 years — and an organization I have the privilege to work for.
Your donation will support the fight against copper-sulfide mining that threatens the wilderness, build programs that bring underprivileged kids into the BWCA, and volunteer maintenance programs.
