When I ask refugees why they chose to come to the United States, the #1 answer I get is, "To have more opportunities for my children." Refugee parents and their kids work hard and make sacrifices to be able to attend school in the U.S. As a staff member with the Karen Organization of Minnesota, I'm honored that we get to come alongside these families as they work toward these goals.

Our three youth development coordinators provide in-classroom support, after-school tutoring, and cultural activities for 60 youth in Humboldt and Harding High Schools. Most of the students we work with have grown up in refugee camps with limited formal education and no English proficiency. Making the leap from refugee camps to American high schools is not easy, but our students persevere with support from our staff who have been through the same challenges. In the past seven years, we've seen hundreds of students improve their grades, build friendships, and feel more confident to take on challenges.

As refugee resettlement is being restricted in the U.S., it is more important than ever to show our support for refugee families and help them succeed. I'm running in the KOMoves for Youth challenge to show my unwavering belief in our students' potential and in the unique value that our youth program provides. I hope you'll give what you can to encourage our youth to keep working hard toward their goals.
