I tap away at my computer keys in a state of humility, gratitude, and exhaustion following several of the most difficult months of my life. I am far from 'recovered' from the eating disorder that almost killed me and the intense onslaught of anxiety and depression that had me wishing it would, but climbing back up. Looking back, the only thing that pulled me through was the support of all of YOU! The messages, calls, prayers and smiles of friends and family literally saved my life and made me remember why I wanted to live! My immense gratitude is mixed with a wave of sadness though, because so many don't have the support to make it through hard times.
As a give back to the community, a means of furthering my recovery, and a recognition of my broader call, I plea with excitement that you will consider partnering in the launch of a 'safe-supportive Rec-O-very home' in Santa Cruz for those struggling with Anxiety, depression, and/or eating disorders that will help them find their footing and their smile. AND IM GOING TO SHAVE MY DREADS (6 YEARS IN THE MAKING!!!) TO MAKE THIS HAPPEN!
After seeing how difficult and expensive it was to get help (dealing with insurance, copays, deductibles, etc), this house will offer a sliding scale rent and provide art, music and recreational therapy while providing housing for 1-6 months to those who need a hand in their pursuit of spiritual, mental, emotional, and physical health. The house is designed to catch individuals before they need inpatient treatment and/or serve as a safe transitional stepping stone following residential treatment that eases them into the real world.
100% of funds raised will go to the acquisition of the house (first month's rent, security deposit, interior modifications for art and music studios, safe communal spaces, etc...) and all leadership (art instructors, nutritionist, MFT support, manager will be volunteer.). The home is designed to be financially self sustaining after upfront costs and will also be a site for community support groups moving forward.
This house is a project of www.sweatysheep.com : whose mission to 'utilize art and recreation to break social, economic, and faith barriers,' is alive and well in this Rec-O-very initiative. Sweaty Sheep is a tax exempt enmity under the fiscal umbrella of the San Jose Presbytery and PCUSA)
