In 1995 the first film office was formed in Northern Minnesota. Over the years, films like Iron Will, The Good Son, and North Country have featured the beautiful landscape and the hard-working people of Northern MN. As film incentives have waxed and waned over the years, so did support for a film office. In 2020, The Upper Midwest Film Office was formed with the help of St Louis County, The IRRRB, The Blandin Foundation, and MN DEED.
Together, in 2022 (the first full year of production), the office attracted 12 productions and over $3.5M in economic activity due to film, TV, and commercial production in the Northland. We are proud of that AND we have much work to do!
Our work has just begun. We will continue advocating for stabilized incentives, creating and funding workforce development programs, supporting the creative community, and growth of the production ecosystem across the Northland so that our corner of the world is known for our talented, hard-working crew that lives, works, and thrive right here!
