Support a clean, cold and clear Lake Superior. Climate change education delivered by sailboat.

$1,000 goal

Last May, I spent 30 days with the 2019 Sea Change Expedition. Sea Change is non-profit organization based in Two Harbors Minnesota. Students, teachers, landlubbers, salty sailors and beyond are invited to spend three to thirty days living, sailing and learning aboard the Amicus II. The crew learns to sail, collaboratively builds a 'climate change toolkit' and delivers presentations to communities and schools on Lake Superior.

By supporting Sea Change, you are supporting local climate change education, specific to our beloved Lake Superior.

There are caribou living on an island on Lake Superior. There are CARIBOU living on an ISLAND on Lake Superior. (The Slate Islands) After leading kayaking trips in the Apostle Islands, partially circumnavigating the Lake and visiting since I was an infant, I'm still marveling over this discovery.

For 30 days, our crew of eight did a counter clockwise journey around the lake.  Starting at the Knife River Marina near Two Harbors MN, and ending in Grand Marais. We created an incredible and unique sense of place as we sailed to different ports and anchorages; Large cities like Duluth, the rugged, remote shores of Ontario and through all of the endless crisp, clear water in between.

The eight of us aboard, came from around the Lake. The Gordon family, who founded the program, Madison and Jesse, college students from Thunder Bay and Ashland WI, respectively, Naomi a teacher from St. Paul and myself, an outdoor instructor and guide. We came to learn, to share and most of all to be a part of Lake Superior and it's people.

Lake Superior is so much more than a lake, it is a freshwater, inland sea. It is the largest lake in the world by surface. It contains 10% of the world's surface fresh water. The waters are warming at the twice the rate of the air and there is a 80% decrease of winter ice coverage since the 1970s. Black bears, wolves and moose roam its shores. Lake trout, endangered sturgeon and loons swim it's waters. Lake Superior impacts the way we live and make a living.

During my month aboard, I made lifelong friends, fulfilled a lifelong goal of learning to sail and most importantly - I feel empowered to protect a sacred place.

By donating, others can share in this powerful experience.  All funds go directly to help support the operations of the program and to offset tuition costs for participants, making it accessible to all.

Thank you for supporting Sea Change.
