Superior Highland Backcountry is in an exciting phase of growth and development! Our first Glade, Finland Glades, is entering its fourth season. We are in conversation with the land agency, Lake County, about expanding the glade area, and beginning the application process for the addition of our first hut. Moose Mountain is now preserved from the potential of resort development, and we are in conversation with the Forest Service about entering into a partnership to manage select prime areas of the Superior National Forest for Backcountry Ski recreation. Awareness of our vision for a Hut-to-Hut trail system continues to spread, and individuals, organizations and businesses are coming on board to add this wonderful winter offering to the rich array of outdoor recreation experiences that are available in Northeast Minnesota.
Imagine yourself awakening in a small log cabin, to the view that you see above. You arise to stir the coals and cook warm drinks and breakfast, before heading out into the maple forest that surrounds your hut. Yesterday, you enjoyed the fresh 10" of snow, on a gorgeous, sunny, not too warm and not too cold. Today, you will pack up your pulk and travel on to the next glade, about five miles down the highlands from here.
At Superior Highland Backcountry, our mission is to preserve and expand backcountry ski opportunities along the highlands of Lake Superior. We educate, promote, and teach our sport. We advocate, protect, and utilize our landscape. And we are building the cornerstones for a trail system that will outlast all of us.
Whether you are an experienced backcountry skier or splitboarder, someone who would like to get into a new sport, or a wilderness adventurer looking for a new mode of transportation, you are part of our community. We earn our turns, we love our snow, and we share a passion for the experience of traversing the land on those gorgeous winter days. Join us, in person and with any support that you are able to offer! Your contribution goes directly to enacting our projects, for all of us here in the wintery world of the north.
