Good Neighbor Center is a non-profit tutoring and mentoring program grounded in the belief that knowledge is power. Usually, GNC holds a tutoring and mentoring program 3 nights each week that includes homework help and a meal. Due to COVID 19, however, we have been forced to cancel our in-person tutoring sessions until further notice. That does not mean we aren't still helping our young people to succeed. GNC is a small nonprofit and only has 2 paid staff and a small budget, but we continue to work to meet the needs of our young people digitally by offering homework help over the phone or computer. This way the young people can ask questions to understand the work they are assigned. GNC has also been performing building maintenance and developing materials for tutors to use with the students once we are able to resume in-person programming. Finally, GNC has worked directly with our families to provide supplies and connect them with the resources they need in these difficult times.

Many of the young people GNC serves have English as a Learned Language, and some parents have not had the opportunity to attend schooling prior to coming to the United States. Many families came to the US as refugees or immigrants, fleeing war and violence. The work that GNC does is more important than ever, as schools move to distance and online learning. Many students are not able to understand their assignments and don't have parents that can help them due to language barriers. GNC is working tirelessly to provide help and resources to our young people.

Funds raised will go towards paying the salaries of GNC's staff, procuring supplies, and paying bills like the utilities and internet. It is integral that GNC weather this storm and come out on the other side of Safer at Home, so that we can continue the work that we do to empower young people through education.
