Fundraising Updates: $700 left to raise from our $1500 goal

Update posted 5 years ago

I want to thank you profusely, because we launched a fundraiser last week to try and raise $1500 this month and we’re already over halfway there! Thank you, thank you! One generous supporter has offered us a $250 matching grant so now is a great time to donate and make your donation go twice  as far. My goal is to reach that match within the next 48 hours.

On Saturday, we’ll be hosting the first of our next four community journalism trainings.

  1. Aug. 15, 9am-11am

  2. Aug. 27, 4pm - 6pm

  3. Sept. 19, 9am-11am

  4. Sept. 24, 4pm-6pm

These trainings are an opportunity for you all to get a behind-the-scenes look at what goes into our community journalism and to become community-trained journalists yourself. They’re free to attend, but donations are always welcome.

We’ll also be streaming the Minnesota State Legislature’s Third Special Session this week and until it adjourns. You can follow along on our website and social media for live video.

Finally, inspired by our friends at City Bureau in Chicago, I did some math. This year The UpTake invested $8600 cash into our community through the pay that we offer our community journalists. That’s around 1/4 of The UpTake’s annual budget and it’s a big deal for an organization of our size. We believe it’s crucial to invest in our community and, more specifically, our community of journalists and journalists-in-training. It’s a priority to make sure we have the dollars we need so we can continue re-investing those dollars into our freelance staff and our community as a whole.

Thank you for helping us reach $8600. Our goal is to invest an additional $1400, at minimum, into our community by the end of this year to help us reach our goal of $10,000.

The UpTake is a woman of color-led, community-centered nonprofit news organization, founded in 2007. In our earliest years, we were a citizen journalism organization known for  our livestream coverage of the Minnesota Legislature; electoral campaigns and recounts; and community mobilization efforts. Today, we are a community journalism organization that centers  a deep and continuous analysis of social issues. We believe in collaboration and a multitude of tools, including livestream, to report on the issues pertinent to historically marginalized communities. We see our future as two-fold: the formation of a cooperative newsroom, and the creation of a community journalism school. We strive to equip community members with the tools to maneuver and report on the world and social movements using a methodology that attempts to re-imagine and re-distribute power as an organization, with journalists, and as system actors, in an act of journalistic imagination.
