Today, rising acreage prices and economic pressures are putting the dream of land stewardship out of reach for far too many people. Sharing Our Roots is working to change that by modeling a revolutionary land access solution. At our 163-acre farm in Northfield, we partner with farmers and gardeners who are ready to grow—providing the land, infrastructure, tools, technical support, and hands-on knowledge they need to build thriving regenerative farms and gardens. This shared economy leverages strengths of the whole and nearly eliminates barriers to entry. In this model, we are all stronger together.

And our impact is tangible: We help land stewards who face barriers to land access—including immigrant, BIPOC, LGBTQ+, and emerging farmers—build farm businesses, strengthen local food systems, and develop regenerative practices that restore the land for generations to come.

Moffat is one of them. Raised in the Kisii region of Kenya, Moffat grew up farming and learning generations of traditional organic growing practices. When he brought that knowledge to America, he discovered that expertise alone was not enough to start his own farm. You need access to land, resources, and the opportunity to grow.

Sharing Our Roots stands in that gap. Upon joining our Commons Cohort, Moffat gained access to a farm plot and shared resources to start his farm. Today, Moffado Farm grows organic vegetables that Moffat sells at local markets, providing income for his family and inspiring more community members to pursue farming.

OUR PROGRAMS:  
+ COMMONS COHORT 
We provide long-term land access for a cohort of 10+ farm businesses that currently represent about 40 families. We operate using a shared economy to support farmers who otherwise might not have the means to be successful.

+ COMMUNITY CONNECTORS
We empower 125 local families to grow culturally significant food in 7 community gardens across Northfield and Faribault. The Community Connectors program builds the relationships that power our mission—neighbors growing together, sharing food, stories, and care. For centuries, shared gardens have been a tradition of resilience; today, they light our way toward a more equitable food future. 

+ NATURAL LANDS
Agriculture has often meant loss: of soil, water, and wildlife. But at Sharing Our Roots, we're rewriting that story. Our Natural Lands program focuses on cleaning our waterways, collecting native seeds, planting indigenous prairie species, and protecting native habitats. Our Wildlife Counts program documents the return of life to the land, from songbirds in the hedgerows, to pollinators in the fields, to frogs in the wetlands. We're growing food that nourishes people while rebuilding the ecosystems that sustain us all.
