Theater Mu

A nonprofit organization

STRONG ROOTS. BOLD FUTURE. ONE COMMUNITY.

For almost 35 years, Mu has been a cultural home and artistic sanctuary, uplifting Asian American stories of resilience, love, identity, and belonging. In a world where Asian American narratives are too often overlooked, censorship threatens artistic expression, and theaters nationwide face funding cuts, Mu stands firm in our mission.

This past 2024/25 season, Theater Mu:

  • amplified largely South Asian American and queer stories, including the world premieres of Ankita Raturi's Fifty Boxes of Earth and, in collaboration with Stages Theatre Company, Katie Hae Leo's When You Trap a Tiger, based on the Newbery-winning book by Tae Keller
  • hired 125 artists for the mainstage, with dozens more hired for youth programs, workshops, and community performances
  • nurtured the next generation, working with 3 early-career fellows, 32 Mu Training Institute students, and 22 Mu Explorations Summer Camp participants.
  • continued its accessibility standards of providing Pay As You Are ticketing and performances with open captions, mask requirements, large-print playbills, sensory kits, and audio description.

From artistic director Fran de Leon: "At Mu, we focus not only on theater-making, but also on community building. Your partnership is an investment in the next generation through in-school and summer youth programs, teaching artist training, and the shepherding of new work in a nurturing environment that AAPI artists and audiences can call home."

From managing director Anh Thu T. Pham: "Theater Mu is who it is due to the community: the artists who are transforming American theater, the audiences who cheer us on, and you—the donors and funders who support us with your significant contributions, be that $5 or $50,000. Thank you for believing in us so much that you invest your hard-earned resources into our mission."
