Greater Pittsburgh Community Food Bank exists because a growing number of people in our community struggle to meet a basic human need--food. No one should have to choose between food and other essentials, but when times are tough (an unexpected medical emergency, rise in rent, gas or utilities, job loss or cut hours) food is typically the expense people will cut to make ends meet. In fact, food insecurity has swelled to the highest levels in over a decade, affecting 1 in 8 individuals, including 1 in 5 kids, in southwestern PA.
The Food Bank addresses food insecurity by working with 1,000+ community partners in 11 counties to provide millions of meals and hope to those in need. Your gift today ensures that every person that visits a distribution or partner pantry can find relief, a healthy meal and a shoulder to lean on while they get back on their feet. You help kids get the nourishment they need to focus in school and grow healthy and strong. You help seniors on special diets get fresh produce and shelf stable items to keep them healthy. You help a parent get enough food to feed their families.
Together, we can make a real difference. Every $1 helps provide up to 3 meals.
Lisa is a single mom living in Hastings, PA with her eight-year-old daughter, Mia. The nearest grocery store to their home is a 12-mile drive, and since she doesn't have a car, she depends on rides from family and friends. To help stretch her budget and get the groceries they need, Lisa turns to the Cambria County Backpack Project, a partner of the Food Bank. "The high cost of groceries is so overwhelming. I always run out of food stamps before the next month." She says, "I don't have to stress as much with the weekend bags of food from the CCBP and I know it's all food that's good for [Mia]. It makes me feel good to know that someone is blessing us with food...to know people care."
