Family Equality - Advancing Equality for LGBTQ+ Families.

With the belief that every LGBTQ+ person should have the right and opportunity to form and sustain a loving family, regardless of who they are or where they live, Family Equality works to advance legal and lived equality for LGBTQ+ families, and for those who wish to form them, through building community, changing hearts and minds and driving policy change.

Together, we can create a future where all families with lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender or queer members live in communities that recognize, respect, protect and value them--and where all systems of support for LGBTQ+ youth in the care of child welfare services seeking permanency, and for LGBTQ+ adults seeking to form their families through foster care, adoption, assisted reproductive technology, surrogacy, or other means are free from discrimination.

  • We connect LGBTQ+ families, prospective parents, and youth with community across the country.
  • We provide important education about LGBTQ+ paths to parenthood for community members and professionals.
  • We help LGBTQ+ families and our allies advocate for legal and lived equality through state and national campaigns.
  • We organize LGBTQ+ families, providing opportunities to speak out and take action.

The 2015 U.S. Supreme Court decision that made marriage equality the law of the land was life-changing for hundreds of thousands of LGBTQ+ families. The historic ruling, in Obergefell v. Hodges, granted every American the freedom to marry, and afforded same-sex couples and their children equal rights, benefits, and protections.

As the five-year anniversary of this historic ruling approached, Family Equality brought together two LGBTQ+ families in Texas to explore what marriage equality means to them. These are their stories, in our Out in Texas docu-series.

The fight for LGBTQ+ family equality is far from over. Your support and engagement are critical to our success.  For more information, or to see how you can take action and get involved, please visit
