Zorongo turns Forty. For many folks, that birthday is filled with terror. But, quickly, we realized Forty is just the beginning.

Forty years of Zorongo. Forty years of flamenco classes. Forty years of flamenco performances. Forty years of supporting artists and musicians. Forty years of training generations of flamenco enthusiasts, Forty years of inspired audiences. Forty years of bringing passionate, lively dance to the Twin Cities and Minnesota.

How did we do it? With your help. 75% of Zorongo’s income is from contributed sources.

Zorongo has become the most prominent studio dedicated to flamenco in the Upper Midwest, thanks to contributed income from people like you.

What does your contribution support?
In the last year:

  • 27 artists have been paid
  • 47 performances were given throughout Minnesota,
  • 3,350 people have been impacted by the art of flamenco.

 Zorongo Classes support

  • 9 teaching artists
  • 2 live musicians accompany classes at all levels
  • 170 students (beginner to professional) participated in 391 instructional hours.

Zorongo hosted 4 Flamenco Concerts paying artists 80% of the ticket sales.

What is in store for the next year?

Zorongo presents "The Birds Gather” in November at the Cowles. Created by Artistic Director Susana di Palma, Hip Hop master Darrius Strong, composer/guitarist Juanito Pascual, and Zorongo dancers, your contribution makes this event possible.

“The Birds Gather” is the first section of a longer work. Then, with your help, we will bring "Conference of the Birds*" to the stage in 2023 with the same stellar artists.

With your support, Zorongo is planning traditional flamenco performances for 2023.

  • February: Zorongo artists will perform as part of the Marine Candle Series.
  • Spring: internationally renowned singer Alfonso Cid will perform for an Icehouse MPLS and lead workshops in the Zorongo studio.
  • We hope to conclude our 40th year with a celebration.

How can you help?

75% of our operating budget comes from contributions. The average online donation to Zorongo is $76.

This year, will you donate to the future of Zorongo? Make a contribution equal to how old you would like to see Zorongo become:  Do you want Zorongo to continue for 40 more years, contribute $80. $100 if you want flamenco for 100 years.

100% of your contribution goes directly to support the creation of new works, employing a singer, musician, dancer, or direct project evaluation.

Zorongo's Board of Directors, Executive Director G. Michael Bargas, Artistic Director Susana di Palma, and all our artists want to thank you, whether you are a new or old friend, for supporting our mission.

* “Conference of the Birds” is an allegory written by Persian poet Farid ud-Bin Attar in the 12th Century. The Birds of the world unite to choose a leader for the challenging quest toward the great Simorgh.
