History & Legacy
Founded in 1988 by the visionary Reverend Carl Walker and Grant West, Walker West Music Academy has been a cornerstone of music education and enrichment for almost 40 years, welcoming students of all ages and backgrounds. Located in Saint Paul at 650 Marshall Avenue, our vibrant music learning community, rooted in the African American cultural experience, inspires growth and connection through music for everyone from 6 months old to adults.
As what is believed to be the nation's oldest community music school founded by African American musicians, Walker West offers affordable, accessible, and high-quality instruction across all genres, with a special emphasis on jazz, gospel, and improvisational music.
More than just a school, we are a warm and welcoming community where our dedicated teaching artists — accomplished musicians themselves — ignite a lifelong love of music and foster a deep sense of belonging.
