Food 4 Kids program
Food 4 Kids: This initiative provides weekend meal bags to students in the Hastings school district who have been identified by school staff as needing extra food over the weekends. Currently, we serve 250-280 bags per week, distributed confidentially to ensure the dignity of each student. This program is crucial for addressing food insecurity among children, allowing them to focus better in school and promoting overall well-being.
Community in Schools
This program focuses on surrounding students with a supportive community, empowering them to stay in school and achieve their full potential. During the 2023/24 school year, CIS managed a caseload of 120 students. The program includes service-learning projects, providing basic needs closets, social and emotional support groups, homework support groups, and a mentoring program. These efforts help students overcome barriers to success, fostering both academic and personal growth.
Basic Needs Closet
Every child deserves the essentials to thrive in school and beyond. The United Way of Hastings is making sure students have access to basic necessities—because no child should have to worry about hygiene products, school supplies, or clean clothes when they should be focused on learning. Through the Basic Needs Closet, students can discreetly access essential items like deodorant, toothbrushes, body wipes, laundry detergent, school supplies, and more. By providing these necessities, we’re giving students the confidence and security they need to succeed.
