Tools designed to develop healthy life skills provided to women in transition

For the last three years, Tool Shed Inc. has been providing weekly support groups to ex-offenders and their families to help them rebuild their lives and relationships with over 450 Morrison County at risk families. Tool Shed’s committed board of directors have been involved in jail ministry and also licensed to work within the fields of chemical dependency, correctional, and mental health.

Tool Shed’s mission is to provide a safe and nurturing environment where tools designed to develop healthy life skills are provided to individuals with the desire to make life changes, specifically incarcerated or recently incarcerated women.

Tool Shed, Inc. is conscious of the increasing number of women incarcerated in the organization’s service area and state. The most effective way to break this cycle is to assist at risk families in building a strong healthy foundation on which to build an improved lifestyle. For each woman whose life is improved the life of their present and/or future children and/or grandchildren will be improved as well.

Tool Shed Direct Services will adapt to the emerging needs of Central Minnesota’s incarcerated women by providing comprehensive services during their incarceration and upon their release that will assist them in reintegrating with their families and their communities. Providing individualized guidance to incarcerated women will help prepare them for the responsibilities necessary to live a drug-free, crime-free life for themselves and the future of their families.

For many women in transition from incarceration, there is a crucial need for sober housing upon release from jail and especially while waiting for placement in chemical dependency treatment and/or upon completion of treatment. It is Tool Shed's priority to obtain transitional housing by fall of 2016 for single women without children in their immediate care in Morrison County, MN.

Tool Shed Inc. hired two part-time employees in May of 2015: one to provide direct services to women and another to prepare grant funding requests. We look forward to expanding Tool Shed Inc. staff as housing is established.
