Our mission is to improve the quality of life for individuals, families, and communities affected by alcohol and drug dependency by providing affordable and effective educational services grounded in the Twelve Step principles of Alcoholics Anonymous.
Who we are: The Retreat is a non-clinical, mutual-help approach to recovery—an immersive, community-based model grounded in the spiritual principles of AA. In a safe, supportive, and deeply relational environment, guests are invited to study, practice, and live these principles alongside others who have walked the path before them. Our goal is simple and profound: to open the door to a lifetime of sobriety through connection, integrity, and hope.
At the heart of our program is a vibrant community of over 800 volunteers—men and women living their recovery at the highest level. They carry a message rooted in their own experience, making a life in recovery both attractive and accessible. This peer-supported, community-oriented approach integrates guests into the broader Twin Cities recovery community, helping them build strong foundations for long-term sobriety.
Since our founding in 1998, The Retreat has helped more than 33,000 individuals and families begin or deepen their recovery journeys. We are nestled in the Wayzata Big Woods—a natural cathedral for reflection, renewal, and healing. The Retreat is not clinical treatment- it is a transformative, affordable, and deeply effective recovery solution grounded in the Twelve Steps.
Why Your Support Matters
Donor generosity has been the cornerstone of our mission. Scholarships—made possible by people like you—ensure that cost is never a barrier to someone seeking freedom from addiction. Each gift directly opens the door for another individual or family to experience the healing power of community-based recovery.
Every contribution creates immediate opportunities for hope:
$100 provides essential materials for one guest
$300 funds a Family Program scholarship, offering healing and education for loved ones
$1,500 supports a 30-day Residential Program scholarship, giving someone the chance to begin a new life
Whether you give $10 or $10,000, you are helping someone take their first step toward a life of purpose, connection, and recovery!
