About Us

Sukoon Healing of the Minds is a Minnesota-based 501c3 nonprofit organization on a mission to bridge the gap in providing culturally informed mental health services to Minnesota's diverse communities. We strive to promote mental health equity through specialized programming, cultural awareness, and resource sharing to strengthen the mental, physical and emotional health and wellness of our community.

Our Vision

Sukoon Healing of the Minds envisions a future where culturally informed and holistic mental health services are readily accessible, fostering emotional well-being and resilience for all. We are dedicated to empowering Minnesota's diverse communities, de-stigmatizing mental health, and equipping individuals with the knowledge, education, and skills needed to seek and offer support.

Our Programming & Impact

1. Sukoon Helpline: The Sukoon Helpline is a free and easily accessible service that provides culturally informed and holistic emotional support and resources for individuals in distress. Launched in February of 2023, the Helpline operates from 7 PM to 11 PM, six days a week, providing vital support during non-traditional office hours. To date, the majority of our conversations, including calls and texts, have been centered around emotional support, anxiety, depression, and suicidal ideation.

2. Training & Education (T&E): To enhance mental health awareness, break down stigma, encourage help-seeking, and empower individuals, Sukoon has implemented several impactful programs:

  • Breaking the Silence Series: This program comprises community panel discussions led by mental health professionals, leaders, and Imams. They delve into typically taboo mental health topics, creating a safe space for individuals to share their experiences, break the silence surrounding these issues, and foster empowerment through awareness.
  • Mental Health First Aid Training: We're proud to be at the forefront of our community in offering this international program. It equips people from all walks of life with the skills to recognize signs of mental illness and substance use, furthering our commitment to mental health education.
  • Restorative Circle Series: In partnership with SNAP (Sisters Need a Place) and Reviving Sisterhood, Sukoon organized two 5-part Restorative Circle series. Particularly tailored for Muslim sisters, these sessions, led by Najla Mohammed Jaabir and Dr. Abyan Bashir provided valuable insights into resilience and self-care.

Our Journey

Our journey began in March 2019 as Dr. Shabaz Charity Group, a social services nonprofit. By late 2021, it became clear through both community feedback and research that the Minnesota community lacked a communal platform to support BIPOC, particularly Muslim, individuals and families grappling with life's challenges and the resulting mental health struggles, in a culturally-informed manner. This understanding is deeply rooted in our organization's identity as a BIPOC-led entity, where 100% of our staff and board identify as the constituency we serve.

In December 2022, we rebranded as Sukoon Healing of the Minds, with a new mission to provide holistic, culturally informed support and resources for those in distress. Our approach involves three branches of programming.
