Signals Rising

Signals Rising offers free radio hardware and training to directly impacted communities responding to a crisis or other event through mutual aid organizing. We prioritize getting the power of communication back into the hands of community members. By fostering a culture of preparedness and mutual aid we can collectively become more resilient to future climate disasters and other crises.

When 911 is down, a neighborhood with a radio communication plan can conduct its own search and rescue operations, share resources such as food and water, report safety concerns, and check on vulnerable residents. This type of grassroots organizing builds community resilience and self determination. It is important that individuals and mutual aid groups have the resources and skills to use independently controlled radio networks to support their organizing efforts, share information, and protect their communities from harm. 

Signals Rising facilitates virtual radio theory and introductory radio usage courses online and in person, as well as supply radio hardware and design radio systems for mutual aid groups. Last year, we spent over 50% of our total budget on direct mutual aid and educational programming in an effort to mitigate the financial barrier to entry for radio communication, which is often relatively high. Since the beginning of 2025, Signals Rising has seen a 500% increase in training requests and 1300% increase in mutual aid requests for radio hardware. We expect this upward trend to continue into the foreseeable future and are determined to scale our efforts to manage the increasing volume of support inquiries.
