Sherburne County 4-H Youth Development - "To Make the Best Better"

4-H is Minnesota’s largest youth development organization, growing leaders in every part of the state. Last year, over 300 youth participated in Sherburne County 4-H programs.

The 4-H experience grows leaders with life skills like confidence, independence, resilience and compassion. Youth in 4-H are 2x more likely to make healthy choices, 4x more likely to contribute to their communities and 2x more likely to be civically active. 4-H grows true leaders.

  • Extension 4-H’s research-based curriculum and learn-by-doing approach is delivered by experienced staff and volunteers to support the positive development of Minnesota's youth.  In Sherburne County 4-H, there are nearly 100 volunteers that help make 4-H experiences possible.

  • Whether 4-H'ers are building robots, raising dairy cows or writing musical plays, they are learning the leadership, problem solving, decision making and communication skills they need to succeed.

  • Youth who participate in 4-H programs:

    • Build self-confidence through mastery of skills and public speaking.
    • Expand their understanding of citizenship and government.
    • Learn to work collaboratively with their peers and adults.
    • Begin career development.
    • Learn first-hand from community leaders.

Learn by Doing Approach

Effective youth programs do so much more than keep kids busy. Youth learn best when they are actively involved in their learning. 4-H uses the experiential learning model, which involves learning by doing in three basic steps of a continuous cycle: Doing an activity, Reflection on the experience and Applying what was learned in new or different life situations.

4-H’s “learn by doing” model leads to self-directed learning throughout the lives of youth.

Your Support Matters

For many youth across Minnesota, 4-H can be the place where youth learn, lead and build meaningful connections with adults who believe in them.

Sherburne County 4-H Youth Development wishes to expand our program - through offerings and partnerships that help more youth, and their families, to find their place in 4-H.
