SABATHANI: A COMMUNITY SERVING A COMMUNITY
Faces, faces, and more faces. Babies. Children. Adults. Senior Citizens. People coming, people going. People seeking food, clothes, jobs, education, health care and more.
This is Sabathani Community Center -- an organization that started from a grassroots effort in 1966 to a multi-service organization today serving 32,000 people a year. Sabathani is a place where families throughout South Minneapolis come to receive services in an atmosphere of community and cultural respect.
WHAT'S AT SABATHANI?
People come to Sabathani for a food shelf; free clothing, furniture and household goods; after-school education for kids and teens; independent living services for seniors; and community-based health and wellness services. The Sabathani building is a multitude of other nonprofits and small businesses delivering services that complement Sabathani programs. We're a community serving a community.
THE WORK OF SABATHANI
Sabathani equips people to tackle the barriers in their lives. We meet this challenge by helping people to first survive and then to thrive. At every step along the way, people are treated with kindness and respect.
HOW SABATHANI MEETS NEEDS
Sabathani relies on charitable donations to meet the needs of so many who come for assistance. You can become a part of another Sabathani community. The caring community. The donor community.
As a donor, you stand with us in our mission "to provide people of all ages and cultures with essential resources that inspire them to improve their lives and build a thriving community."
WHAT YOU CAN DO
Please give today. You will inspire a life and become part of a new community. The caring community of Sabathani.
Thank you for your support.

An Overview of SCC Key Programming
FoodSelf & Active Seniors:
In 1975, Sabathani Community Center opened our neighborhood food shelf as an emergency food security resource for the community. Today, our food shelf distributes over 1 million pounds of food annually — including culturally specific, locally sourced, perishable, and shelf-stable items —to approximately 32,000 individuals annually.
We offer a complete program of social, recreational, and educational opportunities for seniors of our community, featuring a robust and active Senior Program. Sabathani Community Center is the place for seniors to connect with their friends, learn a new skill, pursue a favorite hobby, and generally have a good time. We’ve designed the Senior Program with special activities and services intended just for our seniors, including social events, monthly outings, exercise classes, and a whole lot more.
Workforce Strategies:
Sabathani’s Workforce Strategies Program prepares participants for employment in livable-wage jobs. The program is anchored around intensive, individually tailored, culturally responsive case management. Services include career counseling and goal setting, soft employment skills, a healthy lifestyle assessment, resume building, and practice interviews.
Be@School/Stronger Together:–Partnering for the Success of Our Children
All parents have dreams for their children and want the best for them!Be@School, known as Stronger Together, helps children falling behind in school with individualized support to help them stay on track for high school graduation. Program staff partner with youth, families, schools, the community, and Hennepin County to increase school attendance, improve community connections, and provide partners with knowledge, skills, and resources to help children succeed.

Sabathani Community Energy Project:
The South Minneapolis community needs a place that people can trust in times of climate-related emergency, power outages, and natural disasters. In 2021, as part of its Community Revision Project, Sabathani embarked on an initiative to become a safe, secure Resilience Hub for our community. Over the next several years, Sabathani, in partnership with the Center for Energy and Environment, Xcel Energy, and the City of Minneapolis, is working to turn Sabathani’s building into an efficient, green energy Resilience Hub for the community.
Community Needs Assessment:
Sabathani Community Center is clear about having an impact in the lives of its South–Minneapolis communities and creating community ripples through their work. The impacts can be seen in the lives of individuals, initiatives sparked within communities and changes generated in institutions and agencies of change.
