RenegadeEnsemble: Creating adventurous and accessible programming of new music in Minnesota

RenegadeEnsemble seeks to further develop and foster an audience for contemporary vocal and instrumental chamber music in Minnesota by promoting the work of local artists and composers through performances, recordings, workshops, interdisciplinary collaboration, and educational outreach. 

We seek to champion the unfamiliar, the weird, the independent, and the obscure musical ideas that don’t fit into the current musical landscape and connect artists and audiences interested in new music.

RenegadeEnsemble regularly collaborates with professional local musicians devoted to the creation and promotion of new music in the Twin Cities and beyond. Founded in 2004 as a vocal ensemble at the University of Minnesota, RenegadeEnsemble has performed a large variety of modern music, including such 20th century staples as Erik Saties’s “Vexations,” John Cage's "MUSICIRCUS," George Antheil’s “Ballet Mécanique,” Terry Riley’s “In C,” and Karlheinz Stockhausen’s “Stimmung” as well as new works by living composers. In 2022, RenegadeEnsemble refocused its mission towards vocal and instrumental chamber music written primarily by composers connected to Minnesota and the upper Midwest to better foster a community of local performers and audiences interested in new music.

Since 2023, RenegadeEnsemble has been the primary sponsor of the Vanguard New Music Series, which is dedicated to presenting frequent concerts featuring local composers performed by local musicians. In 2025, the series will expand to concerts every other month at Zion Community Commons in Saint Paul. We are excited to share the abundant creativity and talent of the Minnesota new music community through both the Vanguard New Music Series and our own independent projects.
