RAGAMALA FURTHERS CULTURE THROUGH ART
Ragamala Dance Company is the vision of award-winning mother/daughter artists Ranee Ramaswamy, Aparna Ramaswamy, and Ashwini Ramaswamy. We are committed to:
Underscoring the urgent need to embolden artists of color to be at the center of creating change around issues of equity, reckoning, cultural stories, resilience, and renewal
Weaving Indian-American arts, heritage, and perspectives into the nation’s cultural fabric
Igniting art as a catalyst to connect people, communities, and ideas across boundaries of income, gender, culture, and faith
Providing opportunities for Indian-Americans to see our own art forms, stories, and experiences reflected on prominent dance stages
Inspiring reflection and conversation about our diasporic identities and evolving communities to move, educate, and challenge diverse audiences in the Twin Cities and beyond
CHILDREN OF DHARMA
Your GTMD gift will go towards the creation of Children of Dharma, a multi-faceted performance and engagement series. In Children of Dharm, we unlock critical moments and metaphorically potent stories from the vastest epic in world literature, The Mahabharata. Through a series of atmospheric vignettes guided by the Ramaswamys’ iconic synthesis of cultural context, lush visual imagery, physical mastery, and truthful emotion, this multidisciplinary experience mines the enduring nature of India’s ancient wisdom, perhaps its most important gift to the world.
COMMUNITY ENGAGED SERIES
In conjunction with the stage presentation of Children of Dharma, we will create a community engagement series that explores what it means to be an immigrant in the United States. How does the sharing of our own stories—and listening to those of our neighbors—help forge the connections that build strong communities? Putting stories of immigration and cultural justice at the center, we aim to dismantle practices of disinformation and misunderstanding that plague our communities. The series is aimed at participants of all ages and backgrounds.
