Each year 6-8 million pets enter shelters, and an estimated 3-4 million are euthanized -- simply because they do not have a loving home. When PetSmart, Inc. was established in 1988, its founders made a conscious decision not to sell dogs and cats. Instead, they allocated space in their stores for pet adoption agencies to utilize to help address pet overpopulation. Since 1994, PetSmart Charities® has become a leading funder of animal welfare agencies across North America, donating more than $88 million to animal welfare programs and helping to save the lives of more than 3.8 million pets through its support of more than 1135 PetSmart Charities Adoption Centers inside PetSmart® stores.
