Patrick and his Eastview teammates were playing in the Blue Ox Hockey Bantam AA Tournament in Brainerd, MN. Patrick scored the game’s first goal and collapsed moments later on the ice. First responders were unable to revive him. It was later determined Patrick had numerous heart defects that caused his early death.

Patrick’s heart condition was never detected during routing exams or sport's physicals. The Foundation is working with Medical & Non-Medical volunteers to provide free youth heart screens for all kids ages 14+.  The screen includes: Blood Pressure, Height/Weight, EKG, Echo cardiogram, MD consultation, taught hands only CPR & how to use an AED.

The Foundation has no paid staff and 100% of donations pay for Medical equipment, medical supplies, business supplies, insurance, volunteer tee shirts and AEDs that are donated to area high schools.

From August 2015 to October 2022, the Patrick Schoonover Heart Foundation conducted 26 Play for Patrick youth heart screens.  Screened 4,342 kids, found 261 with elevated blood pressure (w/repeated check), 272 with abnormal electrical or structural heart defects, taught 3,783 kids & adults CPR & AED awareness and donated 16 AEDs to area Schools.  #Playwithheart
