Stephanie a grandma of a 5 year old whose mom was incarcerated has been raising her granddaughter for her entire life. Her granddaughter hadn't seen her biological mom for 4 years when Stephanie heard of Parenting With Purpose. Stephanie was so inspired by the fact that Parenting With Purpose would help her family without even knowing them! Within 2 weeks of being enrolled in the program PWP recruited two volunteers who could bring her granddaughter to visit her mom.
Every week for the past six months Stephanie's granddaughter has visited her mom at the Mn Correctional Facility in Shakopee. Through these visits Stephanie's daughter and her granddaughter have become very close and have created a bond that would not have been if it wouldn't have been for Parenting With Purpose and our amazing volunteers. The hope that this family has for complete restoration has been an awesome testament to how people can come together and help those in need. That is what Parenting With Purpose is all about!
For more than 27 years, Parenting With Purpose has helped over 6,500 Twin Cities individuals and families transform their lives during and after incarceration. How? By providing programs designed to address the needs of the whole family:
• Parenting classes, mentoring and encouragement to incarcerated parents;
• Support for caregivers; and
• Mentoring services, transportation, stability and love to children.
Parenting With Purpose has had the privilege of helping thousands of families and we hope you are inspired by this story.
• Bring healing, restoration and reconciliation to families impacted by incarceration
• Break the inter-generational cycle of crime and reduce the risk of relapsing into crime
• Reduce the violence at homes and in the communities
• More than 15,000 Minnesota children have an incarcerated mother or father—and they’re among the highest at-risk and least visible populations of children.
• 60-80% of children with an incarcerated parent will themselves wind up in the criminal justice system.
• PWP seeks to break the inter-generational cycle of crime by supporting families affected by incarceration.
• Mentoring for Life Change - one-on-one mentoring for kids and youth ages 5 to 25
• Parenting Classes - designed to meet the unique needs of inmates
• Brother's Keeper / Sister's Keeper - individual coaches strengthening parent's commitment to be positive influences in the lives of their children
