Support our artist-driven community!

Open Eye is a nimble theatre focused on creating larger-than-life spectacles in our intimate space and in outdoor spaces throughout our community. With your support, Open Eye will continue producing innovative art, supporting artists, and building connections within our neighborhood and the broader community.

This summer, our award-winning Driveway Tour returned with a revamped all-ages outdoor puppet show! Liz Howls and Oanh Vu redeveloped THE AMAZING COWBOAT’s script and redesigned the main character puppet to reflect the experience of a young Vietnamese-American child. Puppeteers Tri Vo and Ty Chapman were our lead performers in this popular show that reached 3000+ audience members at 50 performances across the metro!

LOG JAM! A Paul Bunyan Musical Spectacular opened this spring on The Bakken Museum’s green roof! The cast featured eight diverse indie-musical theatre stars fronted by Open Eye favorite Maren Ward (TO THE MOON, CONSTANCE IN THE DARKNESS) as Paul Bunyan and Antonio Rios-Luna as Babe the Blue Ox! With script and music by Josef Evans, direction by Joel Sass, and puppet madness by Steve Ackerman, LOG JAM was a hit for our official return to live theatre!

THE RED SHOES starring the multi-talented Kimberly Richardson triumphantly returned this fall after being postponed in March 2020 on its opening night. With ecstatic audiences and critics, the nearly sold-out run was extended for four more shows!

A few more ways Open Eye has continued to open eyes, hearts, and minds in the last year:

  • We hosted Stuart Bloom's completely sold out run of HOW TO AVOID BURNOUT IN 73 MINUTES and Teresa Mock's THE UNCERTAINTY PRINCIPLE as our first guest artist performances in our return to indoor theatre.
  • Nearly 500 residents of the West Phillips neighborhood attended BridgeFest, a one-night outdoor community art-crawl celebrating the reopening of the 24th Street pedestrian bridge.
  • More than 10,000 households enjoyed imaginative theatre, puppetry, cabaret, and most recently Kevin Kling’s popular DIARY OF A MADMAN radio drama through our online Open Eye @ HOME program.
  • Open Eye showcased Brazilian artist Nina Vogel’s ConCordis—The Heart, a unique experience on Zoom shared with 1-2 viewers at a time as Nina transformed Brazil’s traditional miniature puppet theatre (Lambe-Lambe) into a heart-shaped universe and invited viewers to intimately connect with the work.
  • The Full Moon Puppet Show’s incredible Zoom workshop series, connected local artists to their peers around the world, such as Brazilian artist Nina Vogel, Chicago's Myra Su, Puerto Rico’s Poncili Creacion, and more.
  • Two years of Halloween live-action shadow-puppet shows BUG GIRL by Liz Howls and NIGHT SHADE from Portland presented on the roof of the Bakken Museum.
  • Magical sidewalk spectacles performed in our lobby window, created by puppetry wizard Michael Sommers.
  • Partnered with many artists and community groups through use of our studio space.

You can help ensure that Open Eye remains an artist-driven, artist-supporting cultural hub that builds community through inspiring and accessible theater, puppetry, live music, and storytelling.

We wish you health and happiness and thank you for your support!
