NEON is a place where entrepreneurs start, grow and thrive while building wealth in north Minneapolis and surrounding communities.
What we know about north Minneapolis:
North Minneapolis is a community that is 75% people of color, with many residents having experienced pervasive, persistent poverty and health disparities. Unemployment in north Minneapolis is two times higher than the city as a whole, and even worse for people of color. Median income in north Minneapolis is $17,000 less than the city average.
Seeing the need and solving the problem:
The challenges that face north Minneapolis are well documented and critical to why and how NEON exists. The Twin Cities is in the unfortunate position as the worst metropolitan region in the country for racial equity in several areas including employment. We believe that entrepreneurship and small business development create a pathway toward addressing racial and economic equity. And we know that north Minneapolis and the surrounding area are ripe for economic development opportunities that will benefit residents and neighbors.
NEON has a deep commitment to focus on the needs of entrepreneurs who have not had access to financial services and small business support. NEON’s overall economic development goal is to offer small businesses the support, technical assistance and capital they will need to be successful. Economic development through business development has the power to attract wealth, provide jobs and income growth for residents, generate revenue for local government and revitalize neighborhoods. Our strategic approach to economic development will allow us to focus on businesses that will thrive in north Minneapolis and contribute to the community’s overall success.
Our vision is to:
Create a prosperous, visible, sustainable and highly diverse multicultural business community in north Minneapolis and the surrounding area.
We work with:
Entrepreneurs who are thinking about starting a business and those who are already existing businesses owners. In 2017, NEON served nearly 400 entrepreneurs, providing over 3,597 of technical assistance hours.
