Every day, even as conflict and crisis persist around the world, people are proving that peace is possible. We know this because we’ve seen it—Amal, Bogdan, and Odell have seen it—from Sudan to Ukraine to right here in Minneapolis. What it takes is community—and the support of people like you. 

• In Sudan, where civil war has intensified in recent weeks, Nonviolent Peaceforce (NP) supports Women Protection Team leaders like Amal. Despite being forced to flee her home in Zamzam, Amal—trained in psychological first aid and unarmed civilian protection—continues to rebuild safety networks in Tawila, where thousands of people have journeyed in search of safety. Now, Amal is helping women and girls in Tawila connect to medical and psychosocial support with dignity and care.
• In Ukraine, where local humanitarian volunteers risk their lives every day to evacuate civilians from frontline areas, NP has provided frequency analyzer technology to help detect incoming threats like drones. And in partnership with a local organization, NP has delivered critical training to keep volunteers safe. This past year alone, these efforts helped evacuate over 1,000 people to safety. “We feel supported, not as numbers in a report, but as real people doing this real work on the ground,” shared Bogdan, founder and director of the Kramatorsk Association of Volunteers.
• Here in Minnesota, where NP opened the Hub for Nonviolence and Safety in North Minneapolis two years ago, our commitment to interrupting cycles of violence remains, despite massive federal funding cuts last April that halted much of our programming. Community peacebuilder Odell Wilson continues to support the youth he mentored through our healing circles program, providing them with a safe after-school space to express themselves through art and music, decompress from daily stress, and learn the principles of nonviolence.

There is still a long road to lasting peace. But every day, communities are finding ways to keep each other safe—creating pockets of protection even in the face of violence.

At Nonviolent Peaceforce (NP), we are dedicated to fostering protection and peace in Minnesota and across the globe. For 23 years, our mission has remained the same: to protect civilians through nonviolent means, build peace side-by-side with local communities, and advocate for the wider adoption of nonviolent approaches to conflict. In Ukraine, Sudan, South Sudan, the Democratic Republic of Congo, Iraq, Indonesia, the Philippines, and the United States, NP is interrupting cycles of violence to keep people safe—without weapons.
