Mental health challenges are overwhelming, especially when we're young.
It's even harder when they've experienced traumatic events: community violence, home displacement, abuse, neglect, and countless other traumas.
Your support can help us intervene.
At Nexus Family Healing's short-term youth shelter, Aspen House, our staff provide 24/7, trauma-informed care to every child. We know that with the right care, compassion and commitment, overcoming mental health challenges is possible.
Last year, teenager Sarah arrived at Aspen House, absolutely devastated to leave her home, even though it was the safest option.
She isolated, grieving the loss of her home. Staff gave Sarah space to grieve, while regularly checking on her - offering their support when she was ready.
Slowly, Sarah joined group meals, participating in conversation. As she grew more comfortable, she worked with staff to develop healthy boundaries and coping skills.
During this process, Sarah's social worker had been looking for a family member she could live with. Her aunt immediately did what was necessary for Sarah to live with her.
Once Sarah learned that she would be able to live with her aunt, she was elated. Staff shared, "She was like a totally different kid. She was so happy and excited. It’s helpful when youth’s team can quickly identify a safe place for them to go, especially if it’s someone they are related to and already have a relationship with."
Sarah, equipped with coping skills and hope for the next step in her life, was ready to move in with her aunt.
