New American Academy (NAA) was founded in 2008 here in the twin cities. The NAA has 5 members in its board of directors, executive director and president. According to the Minnesota’s council of nonprofits (2005), nonprofit organizations like NAA are essential to the vitality of communities. They enrich the quality of life, epitomize the highest social values and straighten democracy. Since its inception, the NAA has been advocating improving the lives of east African communities particularly, Somali and Ethiopian immigrants in various ways including helping them adapt to the American way of life, finding good quality schools for their children and adults, finding low income housing, learning English language etc. all staff has been working voluntarily as of now. The organization was found out of growing need and demand of the Somali & Ethiopian immigrants. NAA’s mission is to promote social, health and lives for all Somali community by reaching out and connecting its members to one another to preserve the fabric of their culture while assisting them in adjusting to their new lives, new languages and healthy integration into the larger American society. Achieving this involves creating programs which build youth leadership, offering educational activities and opportunities, such as academic tutoring, mentoring and education for employment, promoting organized sports, health and cultural education and assisting seniors.
