Mixtape Dance Mn

"Mixtape 8" as our annual evening length production, is a platform that caters to our local hip hop artists to create and showcase their choreographic work in a proscenium space, allowing professionals to thrive in their journey and young professionals to learn. This production allows artists to also collaborate with live musicians to generate original music and design their own work with a lighting designer. 

This upcoming production will take place at the Luminary Arts Center in June of 2026. With our recent organizational transition, we have a new concept in addition to this production that we cannot wait to share with you all soon! 

The executive summary of our mission and vision:
MIXTAPE is an artistic organization focused on dance theater and the professionalization without gatekeeping resources of the Twin Cities Hip Hop dance community. We offer opportunities for equitable pay to this community and access to our collaborators. In addition, MIXTAPE choreographers, lighting designers, videographers, and composers offer a paid mentorship program for people in our community. We seek to create a network of Hip Hop artists dedicated to a high level of craftsmanship in the Twin Cities. 

MIXTAPE has produced seven years of successful arts programming that has grown exponentially due to grant funding, strong leadership, a visionary cast, and a deep investment in the Hip Hop community. The arts programming is centered around the annual performance of Hip Hop choreographers that mixes the voices of each dance-maker. MIXTAPE provides resources for these artists: a music director who creates an original score for the choreographer, a lighting designer who builds a scheme for the dance piece, a visual director who produces a video element for the work, and an artistic director who provides a direction for the entire dance theatre production. Each of these people collaborates with the choreographer to expand and push their artistic vision. These resources are scarce in the Hip Hop dance community, and MIXTAPE models the organization necessary to obtain such assets.
