Since 2003, Minnesota Sheltie Rescue has helped over 950 Shelties in need. We are a foster-based rescue and do not have a central shelter where dogs are housed. Instead, all of the dogs in our program live in loving foster homes while they await their forever homes.
All dogs in our program are fully vetted prior to being adopted. This includes spay/neuter, dental, vaccinations, microchip, and any other veterinary care they may require.
We take in a large number of senior Shelties and Shelties with medical needs, requiring additional veterinary care to get them healthy and ready for their forever home. For some dogs, vet costs are ongoing and expensive. Rather than adoption, they continue to live in their foster homes and we ensure they will get the vet care they need for their lifetime.
We take in Shelties from many different situations. We work with animal shelters that have Shelties in need, allowing them to provide a spot for another waiting dog. Shelties are a shy breed and often do not present well in a shelter environment. We also work directly with owners who are no longer able to keep their Shelties. If our numbers are high and our foster homes are full, dogs from impound or shelters facing a questionable future are given highest priority, while families looking to surrender their dog may be asked to keep the dog until we have room.
We obtain as much information related to temperament and health history as possible. We ask our foster families to share everything they know about their foster dog with potential adopters.
Once a dog is in his/her forever home, we follow up with the adopting family for the life of the dog. We hold an annual reunion for the dogs, their families, our volunteers and supporters. We offer educational programs on topics such as health, grooming, training, and behavior issues several times a year.
