The Minnesota High School Equestrian Association was established in 2001 and grew out of a need to provide young equestrians of all levels and abilities with an opportunity to represent their high school in equestrian "team" competition. Equestrian sports have become increasingly popular at the collegiate level allowing for continued equestrian competition and scholarships.

The MHSEA program operates as an Independent Provider to the various high schools that have approved the content of the program. The MHSEA provides all administrative support and paperwork relating to the program at no cost to the school. The MHSEA will determine whether a member has met the specific MHSEA and school requirements for such member to be recognized by the school as a JV or Varsity athlete and/or to receive a school letter. The MHSEA communicates directly with the schools relating to the details of the program, the school’s approval of the program, and the determination of school recognition for members.

MHSEA members need to be aware of the requirements and criteria specified by their high school for participation in a program such as the MHSEA. Such requirements may relate to their school’s academic and behavioral standards for student participation as well as applicable Minnesota State High School League eligibility requirements. Members and their parents are expected to know, understand and comply with all requirements or restrictions applicable to their participation.
