Presenting masterful and inspiring dance through performance and education.
MDT aims to commission world premiere productions and revivals of classic repertory by nationally and internationally known choreographers, to support and showcase the work of established and upcoming local artists, and to present annually our beloved masterworks for Minnesota audiences.
MDT needs your help to remain a vital part of Minnesota’s cultural landscape. Share with us our vision for the next half century!
In 1962, Loyce Houlton, one of the first American women to gain international recognition as a choreographer, teacher and producer, founded Minnesota Dance Theatre (MDT), embarking on an artistic journey that would change the Twin Cities’ artistic landscape and have a lasting impact on the world of dance. Under her direction, MDT began attracting attention for the beauty, energy and daring aesthetics of its work, eventually receiving the national recognition that helped establish MDT as the flagship dance company in Minnesota. In 1995, Lise Houlton, recently retired from an acclaimed international performing career with Stuttgart Ballet and American Ballet Theatre, took the helm as company Artistic Director. During her tenure, Lise has revitalized several of Loyce Houlton's masterworks, cultivated a diverse repertoire of celebrated work, and choreographed several pieces already recognized as company classics, including her signature Rumblings.
Performing Company & Dance School Partnership
Since its inception, MDT has prioritized the partnership of a professional performing company with a dance school in an effort to make Minnesota Dance Theatre & School a place where professionals and students can work and learn together, sharing and celebrating their experience practicing our extraordinary art form.
