Bikes Teach! Help us build a home for track cycling, education and entertainment in Minneapolis.
The Minnesota Cycling Center is a nonprofit
organization with a mission to create a vibrant entertainment, racing, and
education destination for cyclists of all ages in the Twin Cities. The proposed
multi-purpose Velodrome and event center will provide community cycling and
S.T.E.M. (Science. Technology. Engineering. Math) educational programs, street-level retail, and a home for gatherings
of all types in the region.
Only 39 percent of Minneapolis
8th graders and 41 percent of Saint Paul 8th graders were proficient on the MCA
math test as of 2012, and the percentages were even lower for students of color and those
living in poverty.
(MPS and SPPS, 2012) Childhood obesity remains a critical issue in
Minnesota with 26 percent of 9th graders considered overweight, and
18 percent considered obese. (MN Department of Health, 2010) It is recommended
that children engage in at least 60 minutes of exercise per day, but only 32
percent of kids ages 6 to 13 and 16 percent of teens achieve this goal in
Minnesota. We can and need to do better as
Building Academic Success and Physical Fitness
MN Cycling Center is committed to the academic growth and fitness of our
region’s youth. Through the science of sports and a special standards-based curriculum
developed in partnership with the Minneapolis Public Schools, the Minnesota
Cycling Center will offer dynamic S.T.E.A.M. programming to 6th
through 12th graders, adding the “A” for athletics to improve
students’ fitness and health in addition to their academics. More than just a classroom.
Our indoor velodrome and outdoor BMX track will showcase world-class bike racing all year long. Our 3500-seat concert venue fits perfectly between the Twin Cities' biggest venues and its intimate theaters. If you're looking for a delicious dinner, a fitness class or a quick bike tune-up, our retail partners will have exactly what you need.
