LWV New Brighton Area, LLC

The League of Women Voters was founded in 1920 by Carrie Chapman Catt after the vote for women had been signed into law. The primary goal of the League of Women Voters is to empower and educate voters through the defense of democracy.

Through our long history as a league based in the north metro since 1964 the League of Women Voters New Brighton Area has worked hard to educate voters and empower our community. We serve the communities of New Brighton, Mounds View, St. Anthony, and Columbia Heights. Here are just a few examples of the work we’ve done so far:

• Hosted speakers from MNERA, ACLU, Office of Conflict Resolution, Peacekeepers, and DC Statehood.
• Held and attended discussions on the topics of end-of-life options, the READ act, Roe v Wade, and firearm safety.
• Engaged a Youth Fellow to work on voter outreach at local High Schools.
• Through candidate forums and legislative interviews, we have engaged with candidates and elected officials for our local house and senate districts, city councils, mayors, and school boards.
• Attended naturalization ceremonies to register new citizens to vote.
• Continued our involvement with the wider LWV community by participating in state and national conventions and working with the Council of Metropolitan Area Leagues.

In addition to continuing the efforts we’ve already accomplished we want to continue to make strides in voter education and increase interest in voter participation and community engagement.
