Lake Pepin Legacy Alliance (LPLA) is dedicated to saving the largest lake on the Upper Mississippi River from excess sediment. We advocate for upstream sediment reduction, lead sediment management projects, and investigate local concerns in an effort to improve water quality, habitat, and accessibility in Lake Pepin.
New Memberships & Membership Upgrades are matched by the Katherine B. Andersen Fund.

Lake Pepin is a critical resource to the surrounding communities and wildlife, and a vital component of the Mississippi River system. With so much dependent on Lake Pepin, it’s hard to imagine what would happen without it. And yet, that’s the future we face without intervention.
Sediment loads—the size of a city block filled to the height of the Foshay Tower in downtown Minneapolis—accumulate in Lake Pepin every year. With sedimentation rates 10x above normal, the lake is in a fight for survival. It has two water quality impairments and is expected to prematurely disappear in just a few generations.
With member support, LPLA advocates for upstream sediment reduction and local management efforts. We championed a large habitat restoration project with the Army Corps of Engineers and WI Department of Natural Resources to improve ecological and recreational conditions in the area most impacted at the head of the lake.
Public support, like yours, accounts for 40% of our work and enables us to advocate for Lake Pepin every single day. Every contribution of $25 or more is considered an annual membership & entitles donors to certain organizational benefits.
