Lake Pepin is where the Mississippi River slows and widens, creating one of the most unique and important stretches of the river system. It provides critical habitat for fish and wildlife, supports vibrant river communities, and connects people to the outdoors.

But this part of the river is filling in with sediment at an alarming rate, threatening water quality, habitat, and access. That’s why the Lake Pepin Legacy Alliance (LPLA) exists. We are the only nonprofit solely dedicated to protecting this stretch of the Mississippi—and we punch far above our weight. Our advocacy has already secured major investments in restoration and continues to shape upstream solutions that improve the river for everyone.

One of the most significant milestones now underway is the Bay City Habitat Restoration Project—a massive $25 million effort at the head of Lake Pepin that LPLA helped secure funding for. This ongoing project is creating new islands, restoring public boat access, and providing essential overwintering habitat for fish and waterfowl. It stands as a powerful example of the outsized impact that donor support makes possible.

When you give to LPLA, you’re not just protecting one lake—you’re helping safeguard the Mississippi River itself, ensuring clean water, healthy habitat, and thriving communities for generations to come.

Thank you for joining us in protecting the river we all share.
