L'Arche Twin Cities is an authentic community of people with and without intellectual/developmental disabilities. 2025 marked many milestones for us, including our first train trip to a large L'Arche gathering in Chicago. For a glimpse of what our model of mutual aid looks like action, enjoy the below travelogue featuring memories and texts from members of our community in their own words. Donate today and/or share our Instagram and Facebook posts to keep the L'Arche magic flowing in 2026!

JUST A FRIENDLYreminder, everyone Just a reminder for you. You have to be at the train station by 8 AM at the latest.

THE TRIP was exciting, beautiful, rewarding

DO THEY NOT let you check in past 8?

THE DELIGHTFUL L’Arche chaos began

I DONT THINK i have money taken out can we still get stuff without it do you have a budget in place storms and staffing kinda went against us at the group home

THE TRAIN was one of the most exciting parts

I LOVE the train. I mean, I've been on train for many years.

WE HAD TO leave Mao and Leah behind at Union Station.

SO WE GOT her primped and ready and French braided her hair on the sidewalk in downtown Chicago

I GOT TO be the one see and experience, our model of what it means to share life in our community with mutual aid, respect, self determination, and inclusion at the heart of everything we do.

IT WAS LIKE so many fun people to meet from different L'Arches and I'm just like wow you know

SEEING ALL OF US together with all of our luggage plus medical devices was really something.

THEIR WERE people that packed like they were going somewhere for a year.

I STARTED to brainstorm how I would get the medical equipment there by myself.

THOSE ITEMS aren’t meant to roll along city sidewalks

I REMEMBER the students. They were so awesome. I mean, they helped us with our bags.

AT THE ORIENTATION, we were notified about the lost key policy if you lose your room key, it will cost $300. Shaunte misplaced her key.

I DON'T care Chicago

IT WAS so good to be in the midst of so much love and commitment to L'Arche communities

IN THIS particular gathering much of that had to do with vomit

HEY YALL! If anyone sees Ben from ADA dorms, will you tell him that there's some kind of singing beep alarm going off in his room?

WHICH Ben?

AND I REMEMBER going to the dorms, spending the night in the dorms

MUCH OF the group had not been to an extended L’Arche event before, so it was very brave for them to be willing to go on an overnight trip and meet lots of strangers

LIKE THE core member who uses a wheelchair who latched on to Mao like a celebrity and a long lost sister and held her hand at any opportunity.

L’ARCHE IS one of those “somethings” in the world that is bigger than any one of us

SHAUNTE BADGE has been found. It was in the ladies' bathroom

YAY for still saving $300!

THE THING IS having that to do it was so much fun Being there in Chicago so we had such a great time together and I was so happy for us to work together and stuff together helped everyone out and I'm glad that we all have a great day and time to go to Chicago and so before they're doing I was going to say that we had a great time and thanks so much for bringing us all together I hope we all be able to do this again sometime from the train

I'VE KNOWN Alex for like five years in a day program setting

THERE WAS a moment when we were coming back on the train and he—we were just chilling, looking out, looking outside and then he turned and he was like, I feel like we're friends now. We’re buds.

WE ARE watching the sun set over fields of deer in Wisconsin

EVEN THOUGH we are new, and even though we are trying a brand new model, we already carry the true spirit and soul of L’Arche in our community.
