Paulo, our South American prehensile-tailed porcupine, loves cracking open hard nuts like walnuts! In the wild, nuts would be a natural part of his diet, providing essential nutrients and helping keep his teeth healthy and properly worn down.

Feed the Animals at Lake Superior Zoo

At Lake Superior Zoo, caring for animals is at the heart of everything we do. With over 300 animals in our care, our team works every day to ensure each one receives the nutrition, enrichment, and expert attention they need to thrive.

From otters to bears, kangaroos to capybaras, and tamarins to tortoises, the needs of our residents are vast and specialized. Many require unique diets that mimic what they would eat in the wild — including tree gum for primates, sloth gel for our two-toed sloth, and prey animals for our carnivores and reptiles.

As the costs of food, supplements, and supplies continue to rise, we’re raising funds this Give to the Max Day to help feed and care for the animals who call Lake Superior Zoo home. Your gift directly supports tailored, comprehensive nutrition and the expert care that keeps every animal thriving.

🌙 $100 – $499 Donors: Donors at this level will be entered to win an exclusive Nocturnal Zoo Tour! Three lucky winners will join our animal care staff as they feed the residents of our nocturnal building. Meet Tumble the armadillo, hand-feed Paulo the prehensile-tailed porcupine, and get an up-close look at the fascinating lives of our nocturnal animals after dark.

🎨 $500+ Donors: All donors at $500 or above will be entered in a drawing for three spots in a Painting with the Animals Experience — featuring either our African lion or North American river otters! Watch our talented residents create their own one-of-a-kind masterpiece and take home a memory you’ll never forget. (Limited availability!)
