Kabul Small Animal Rescue, a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization in the US, is a veterinary clinic and animal shelter in Afghanistan working to help animals in need. KSAR provides routine care for owned animals as well as medical care and shelter to injured and orphaned street animals. We also find loving homes for homeless pets by providing adoption services both in Afghanistan and abroad. The majority of our patients and residents are dogs and cats, but we have also treated and provided sanctuary for livestock, birds, rabbits, and tortoises. Our resident animals include former working dogs from the NATO occupation, that were left behind in August 2021, some of which have been returned to the US, with the assistance of partner rescues. We look after these animals so that they are safe and cared for. Our animals are vaccinated and titre-tested, spayed and neutered as appropriate, and fed and housed in 17 small facilities and given loving care by local caretakers. We pay our local staff living wages which allows our staff and their families to weather the current humanitarian crisis in Afghanistan.
KSAR does its life saving work under extraordinarily difficult conditions almost unparalled anywhere in the world. Afghanistan has no delivery systems (no FedEx, no Amazon, no DHL), and no mail system and an unworkable customs system, which does not allow wholesale import of supplies. There is no central heating or air, and small wood stoves provide heating in the extremely cold Afghan winter. The vast majority of supplies must be bought locally and critical medicines must be brought in from Dubai, an expensive plane ride from Kabul. Afghanistan is currently weathering a humanitarian crisis, with no end in sight, and the local community is unable to adopt, donate or volunteer. KSAR provides veterinary treatment to local owned animals at no cost when people cannot pay. KSAR continually works to adopt out our animals to the US and abroad, but due to stringent regulations and geopolitical conditions, those costs have increased almost fivefold since before August 2021. It has been virtually impossible to adopt out to certain countries, and the US remains our primary adopter.
One hundred percent of our funding comes from private donations in the US and abroad, and our operations are totally dependent on the continued support by our supporters, who have come through again and again. Our supporters are the lifeblood of the organization and we are grateful for their support.
