John Beargrease Sled Dog Marathon!
The John Beargrease Sled Dog Marathon is the longest running sled dog race in the lower 48 states thanks to the loyal Northern Minnesota communities! Facing the extremes of the rugged terrain of the North Shore and enduring unpredictable weather - the Beargrease is known to mushers as "one tough race". Mushers are white-knuckled as they travel through the Sawtooth Mountains -- it's no wonder why this race is a qualifier for the mighty Iditarod in Alaska.
Not only does this race bring in thousands of race fans for the nearly week long events that support the tourism industry. But, the race also produces education programs within the schools that focus on weather and leadership. Most importantly, we try to keep the history and honor the culture of the great John Beargrease from whom the race is named after.
Safety is our number 1 concern! That's why we ask a team of Vets who are specially trained to care for our 700+ canine athletes. These vets are available to the mushers prior to the race and throughout the race to treat minor injuries to sprains and everything in between. It costs about $350 a mile to produce the race and we go through lots of supplies - especially straw. Seems like a simple thing right? But, we need about $5,000 to be able to properly bed and protect the canine athletes - you can be part of the race by making a donation today!
