A NIGHT TO BEL13VE - 2018
$253,813 Raised
BEL13VERS have already made it possible for 3 people living with paralysis to participate in an amazing paralysis recovery project.
Your gift today will help make it possible for a 4th patient living with paralysis to participate in this amazing recovery opportunity.
That is Jered Chinnock pictured at right.
In 2016 he became the first patient in a medical research project BEL13VE funded at Mayo Clinic.
In its most recent results (published in the September 2018 issue of the medical journal Nature Medicine), Mayo Clinic reports Jered was able to walk over ground using a front-wheeled walker. By the end of the study period, Jered used his entire body to transfer weight, maintain balance and propel forward. In his best session, Jered took a total of 331 steps and traveled 111 yards — about the length of a football field.
In the study, Jered’s spinal cord was stimulated by an
implanted electrode, enabling neurons to receive the signal that he wanted to
stand or step. However, when stimulation
was off, Jered remained paralyzed.

Two independent medical journals have now published the results of Jered’s progress.
Mayo Clinic is now the first medical center in the world to successfully replicate and validate the startling paralysis recovery results achieved by a research team at the University of Louisville in 2014.
