The mission of the Indian Music Society of Minnesota (IMSOM) is to present and promote Indian classical music in the Twin Cities, to foster an understanding and appreciation of the rich and ancient cultural heritage of India and to further fellowship among nations and cultures through music.
In 2019, IMSOM has celebrated its 39th year of bringing the best in Indian classical music to Minnesota. IMSOM has thrived despite the gradual tightening of funding for the arts, and has emerged as a valuable contributor to the vibrant Twin Cities’ arts community. IMSOM's stability and resilience demonstrate its value to the community and are attributable to its persistent ability to offer culturally unique, diverse, entertaining, and educational programming. By the end of 2019, IMSOM will have brought over 390 concerts, lectures and workshops and presented over 675 world-class artists, to a diverse and appreciative community in MN. IMSOM has been an important educational resource in co-sponsoring concerts with local universities, providing an enriching experience both for the lay audience and for students of music. A measure of its growing influence is reflected in the fact that its concerts have drawn over 1500 people in each of the past 10 years and that almost 40% of this audience has been of non-Indian origin.
