Hospitality House Youth Development (HHYD) began as a boy’s club in 1960 and has evolved into a youth program for boys and girls in grades K-12. For 62 years HHYD has been a sustaining presence in the North Minneapolis community and has served over 100,000 kids. Hospitality House uses a holistic approach focused on developing kids spiritually, intellectually and physically through education, athletics and community outreach. As a Christian organization, our main goal and focus is to introduce the kids in our program to Jesus Christ and to create an environment that promotes spiritual growth.
The Urban Learning Center (in partnership with Minneapolis Public Schools) has two aspects: An Afterschool Program (Sept-June) and an all-day summer program called Summer Spot (June-Aug). Both of these programs service K-12 students providing math and reading help from licensed teachers, 1-on-1 tutoring, social and emotional learning, field trips, and time for physical activity and nutrition. In 2021-2022 the students in the Afterschool Program had an overall test score growth of 24% in reading and 30% in math.
Basketball and baseball teams are organized for boys and girls, with volunteer coaches teaching them how to play fairly and competitively. Last season our 13U boys' basketball team won the Park Board championship.
HHYD brings North Minneapolis families together through various events and programs. Christmas with Dignity is an annual sale where parents and guardians purchase donated gifts for their children at 10% of the retail price.
Hospitality House Youth Development provides a Christian outreach focused on the spiritual, intellectual, and physical development of inner-city youth and their families.
