We continue to speak his name: George Floyd. Beloved child of God.

After the murder of Mr. George Floyd, Holy Trinity Lutheran Church in South Minneapolis opened its doors to respond to the community's needs. Positioned around the corner from the Third Precinct police station — the epicenter of the uprising (and not far from the street where George Floyd died) — Holy Trinity quickly realized that we were called to meet the needs of our beloved neighborhood.

Initially, we offered sanctuary to demonstrators, provided space for a medic station for the wounded, and supported small businesses impacted by fires and other damage. After the smoke subsided, it became clear that the neighborhood, once rich with grocery and restaurant options, had become a food desert. Holy Trinity created a pop-up food and basic necessities distribution site. The first day there were hundreds. Over the course of the summer, we served tens of thousands.

Our congregation is still joining hands with its neighbors to help rebuild our community with an eye towards justice, equity, and belonging. As a faith community, we stand with the movement for Black Lives, we believe not all that was destroyed is to be mourned, and we hope that this watershed moment in our community’s life will be an opportunity for new life.

We gratefully ask for your support to continue our commitment to help support the rebuilding of this vibrant, diverse community. This city, not forsaken, is holy, holy ground.
